Learn More about Our Breast Lift Recovery Timeline
As a result of weight fluctuations, the aging process, having a baby, or other conditions, your breasts may begin to sag or droop. Breast ptosis can give you an older appearance, cause skin irritation, and make you feel self-conscious about your chest. Dr. Patricia Berbari can perform breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, to give you a perkier, more youthful bust. She will work to make your procedure as minimally invasive as possible so you can get back on your feet and show off your new bosom. However, to enjoy optimal results from your breast lift, you will need to set aside time to rest and heal from your procedure. If you’re considering mastopexy, read on to learn more about your expected breast lift recovery timeline at our Gatineau plastic surgery practice.
The Procedure
During your breast lift surgery, Dr. Berbari will make an incision around your areola and down to your breast crease. Depending on the size of your breasts, the extent of your lift, and your personal preferences, she may also extend your incision across your breast fold. Next, she will reposition your tissue so it is higher on your chest. If you desire a fuller bosom or lack sufficient tissue for a breast lift, she can also perform breast augmentation at this time using cohesive silicone or saline implants. Once she reshapes and lifts your breast tissue, Dr. Berbari will move your nipples and areolas for a more realistic look. She will then complete your procedure by suturing and bandaging your incisions.
Your Recovery Timeline
Each woman’s breast lift healing is unique, based on the type of incision used, whether or not the procedure included a breast augmentation, and her distinctive medical needs. However, you can expect the following general recovery timeline after your surgery:
- Directly following your breast lift, you will need to have a friend or family member drive you home so you can rest. You will probably feel groggy and disoriented from your anesthesia. Your breasts may also feel sore or tender. It may be a good idea to have someone stay with you during this time to help you with daily household activities.
- For several days after your procedure, you will need to wear a compression garment to hold your tissue in place. Your breasts may begin to bruise or swell at this point. You should be able to manage any discomfort with the painkillers Dr. Berbari prescribes. You should avoid twisting, bending, jumping, or any other activities that could compromise your incisions.
- Approximately one week after your surgery, you will return to our office for a follow-up appointment. At this point, Dr. Berbari will assess your recovery progress and remove your sutures if appropriate. She may clear you to stop wearing your compression garment and replace it with a special sports bra or bandage. Many patients are able to return to work and most daily activities at this point.
- Two weeks after your breast lift, you may begin sleeping on your stomach, if you so desire.
- About one month after your procedure, your swelling and bruising should have diminished greatly or disappeared completely. You may stop wearing a bandage or sports bra at this time, with Dr. Berbari’s approval. You may begin engaging in more strenuous exercise and lifting objects at this point, although you should do so with caution.
- Approximately six weeks after your surgery, sensation should have returned completely to your breast, nipple, and areola tissue.
- Several months after your breast lift, you should be able to enjoy the results of your procedure, since your scars will be fading and your breasts should have healed adequately.
