Tummy Tuck Surgery Statistics
Dr. Patricia Berbari has helped countless patients in the greater Gatineau, QC achieve greater happiness and sense of self thanks to plastic surgery. These procedures can help enhance self-esteem and give you an improved sense of self as well. One procedure that can be especially effective is tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty), which is ideal for sculpting the lower abdominal area.
We at the Centre Chirurgical De La Capitale would like to consider some statistics on tummy tuck surgery to help you understand its popularity and its potential to help you.
A Note on the Numbers Used
Since the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons does not keep cosmetic surgery statistics, many of the numbers we have compiled below come from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The numbers will give some indication of comparable Canadian plastic surgery trends, and note the popularity and effectiveness of tummy tuck surgery among many kinds of patients.
We will also include numbers from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) when possible to provide a greater sense of perspective.
Tummy Tuck Surgery Statistics
According to the ASPS, there were 129,753 tummy tuck surgeries performed in 2017, making it one of the five most popular procedures performed that year. In 2016, the ASPS recorded 127,633 tummy tuck procedures.
International numbers from the ISAPS show 769,067 tummy tucks performed worldwide in 2016. Brazil had the second highest number of tummy tucks behind the United States, with 133,100 recorded. Overall, Brazil actually surpassed the United States for body and extremities procedures performed in 2016.
Tummy Tuck Surgery by Gender
Overall, women were more likely to undergo tummy tuck surgery than men. The ASPS noted 124,869 tummy tucks performed on women in 2017, with comprised 96 percent of total procedures. Just 4,884 tummy tucks were performed on men.
Part of the gender disparity has to do with tummy tucks being performed after childbirth. The procedure can work wonders alone or as part of a mommy makeover for women who have experienced body changes as a result of pregnancy.
Tummy Tuck Surgery by Age
By age, tummy tuck surgery breaks down as follows according to the ASPS:
- 20-29 Years Old - 12,395 tummy tucks performed, comprising 10 percent of surgeries for this age range
- 30-39 Years Old - 46,295 tummy tucks performed, comprising 36 percent of surgeries for this age range
- 40-54 Years Old - 52,934 tummy tucks performed, comprising 41 percent of surgeries for this age range
- 55 Years Old and Older - 18,129 tummy tucks performed, comprising 14 percent of surgeries for this age range
You’ll note the highest numbers tend to coincide with the the ages when women have children or have stopped having children.
Tummy Tuck Patient Satisfaction
In terms of overall patient satisfaction, tummy tuck ranks rather high, particularly when paired with liposuction. The April 2012 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the medical journal of the ASPS, published a study on patient satisfaction and body contouring. When patients underwent a liposuction that also incorporated tummy tuck surgery, the satisfaction rate was above 99 percent.
