Breast Lift Gatineau - Ottawa
Indications
Mammary ptosis (sagging breasts) can occur with or without loss of volume. The purpose is to "lift" breasts that sag and have lost firmness over the years. There are many causes:
- loss of skin elasticity
- weight loss
- loss of volume as a result of pregnancy and breastfeeding
You should be aware that after age 30 the quality and elasticity of breast tissue decreases very quickly. A lift is not guaranteed to last for life, especially if the individual's weight fluctuates. Furthermore, over time, the proportion of glandular tissue (which makes the breast firm) to fatty tissue in the breast declines, making the breast softer.
The areola is often enlarged. During surgery, it is raised and reduced in diameter.
We often see asymmetry between the two breasts, which the patient herself may never have noticed. During the lift procedure, this asymmetry is corrected. The result cannot be 100% guaranteed, as there may be thoracic deformities such as those described on this site at the end of the section on breast augmentation.
Incisions are made around the areola, with a vertical incision down to the inframammary fold. This looks a bit like a small extension, or a lollypop. Depending on the patient, the scar may or may not need a horizontal limb, an inverted T. Sometimes it is also necessary to do a breast augmentation if there is too little breast tissue remaining or if the patient wants to have rounder breasts. (Refer to the section on breast augmentation). We will discuss the full benefits of breast lift surgery during a personal consultation to determine if this treatment is right for you.
RISKS & COMPLICATIONS
Loss of sensation (temporary or permanent) in the nipples is unavoidable and unpredictable, given that an incision will have been made to move the areola upward.
Necrosis or a loss of pigmentation in the areola is a rare but possible complication. It is more common in smokers owing to decreased blood flow caused by nicotine.
(Refer to the section on breast augmentation.)
