The Cheek Augmentation Procedure

We offer two different types of cheek augmentation:

Augmentation with Fat

If you are seeking the most dramatic, long-lasting results possible, Dr. Berbari may recommend cheek augmentation with your own fat. During this procedure, she will make tiny incisions at the edges of your lips and inject the fat she has suctioned previously and treated by washing and centrifugation from your own abdomen. Fat harvest is also done under local anesthesia in a sterile environment through a tiny incision in the belly button. Everything is done under local anesthetic with minimal discomfort.

The advantage of choosing fat transfer is that you can have a larger volume injected in one session, the result is more uniform in that there is less risk of getting lumps or foreign body reactions, the feel is more natural and it lasts longer.

Augmentation Dermal Fillers

As a non-surgical form of cheek augmentation, we can add volume to your face using dermal fillers. We will inject your cheeks with a specially formulated gel that contains hyaluronic acid (a compound found naturally in connective tissue) or another filler material. This minimally invasive procedure can typically be completed in less than 30 minutes. However, the results of cheek augmentation with dermal fillers will only last for approximately nine to 12 months. Many patients choose to undergo multiple treatment sessions to maintain their results.

Dr. Berbari will review the advantages of each type of cheek augmentation during a personal consultation. For even more dramatic results, we can also combine cheek augmentation with another procedure, such as a lip augmentation or a face lift.

Recovery

Your healing period will depend largely on the type of cheek augmentation you choose to undergo. After the surgical procedure with fat, most patients take about three days off of work, school, and other activities to rest, with a full recovery taking about two weeks. If you augment your cheeks with dermal fillers, you should be able to return to regular activities immediately. 

Risks

Cheek augmentation is generally a very safe procedure, no matter which technique Dr. Berbari uses. However, both approaches can (but rarely do) cause infection, bleeding, swelling, bruising, and tissue damage.
